When I was forced to retire on disability, I found myself completely at sea. I couldn’t go very far or do very much; I depended on work for friendships social interaction and mental stimulation. So when work stopped I had nothing.
It took what seemed like half of forever but eventually I realized I needed a role model. Henry David Thoreau seems like the most fruitful one I could pick. He, too, had spent a couple of years living almost by himself. He had come away from that experience with the kind of wisdom I wanted.
So I decided I would pattern my life after the one he described in “Walden”, and compare and contrast his life and mine in this blog.
